The second Atlassian Summit in Europe took place from 3 to 5 September 2018 in the exhibition halls of the Fira Gran Via in Barcelona. After a successful start on Monday, the second day of the fair was also very well attended, with more than 2,500 participants from 60 countries. On day 2, special attention was paid to the product innovations that Atlassian founder Mike Cannon-Brookes presented in his keynote speech. Absolute top topics: the acquisition of app provider OpsGenie (Incident Alerting) by Atlassian and the brand new Atlassian product Jira Ops (Incident Command Center). Both together result in a solution for powerful incident management. catworkx was on site as silver sponsor with a large team from Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
Eventful day 2 for the catworkx team (aka #TheOrangeGuys):
The second day at the Atlassian Summit was very eventful for catworkx. The stand S2A was very popular and there were great discussions. Our team presented our seamless service portfolio for Atlassian environments under the motto “We optimize your team performance”. Dr. Wolfgang Tank (CO-Founder & CIO, catworkx GmbH) showed interested parties in a demo session, for example, the catworkx solution “DSGVO2GO”, for DSGVO-compliant data protection management with Atlassian tools. We were very happy about the many great conversations we had in the past days and would like to thank all visitors to our stand.
Keynote – Mike Cannon-Brookes (Co-Founder & Co-CEO, Atlassian):
The keynote “The Atlassian Journey: Building an Enduring Company and Navigating Cloud & Server World” by Founder Mike Cannon-Brookes was the visitor magnet in the morning hours of the second day of the event. Punctually at 09:00 a.m. the rows of the auditorium filled up, which shone in the colourful sea of lights and created an expectant atmosphere. Atlassian founder Mike Cannon-Brookes took the numerous listeners on a journey into the future of Atlassian products. Together with Scott Farquhar (Co-Founder & Co-CEO, Atlassian) and specialized Atlassian area managers (Aubrey Blanche, Cameron Deatsch, Anu Bharadwaj, Otto Rüttinger) they presented the eagerly awaited product innovations and updates.
Product innovation – Jira Ops (Incident Command Center):
Scott Farquhar introduced the brand new Atlasssian product “Jira Ops”. Modern incident management should ensure faster and more transparent processing of incidents. Special features of Jira Ops are the clear structure of the issues, a structured view of updates from different communication channels and a continuous timeline, which should improve the quality of long-term analyses. Jira Ops is now available as a cloud solution and can be used free of charge until early 2019. Atlassian is thus pursuing the strategic approach of improving incident management and creating a holistic, flexible platform for IT service management. >> Further information about Jira Ops
OpsGenie becomes part of the Atlassian product family:
The new powerful incident management system is completed by the acquisition of the app provider OpsGenie, for the “Incident Alerting” area. For an investment in the triple-digit million range, Atlassian can further expand the functionality of Jira Ops with more than 200 existing integrations (including Jira, Jira Service Desk, Statuspage or Slack). OpsGenie started six years ago with on-call management and reliable multi-channel alerting using email, SMS, voice calls and mobile push. Over time, the monitoring tool has evolved into a platform that enables teams to plan and prepare incidents, collaborate on the solution and analyze their response processes to improve operational efficiency. The team around Berkay Mollamustafaoğlu (CEO & Co-Founder, OpsGenie), had its own booth at the Atlassian Summit and provided detailed information about the new way of “fault communication” as well as firefighter helmets as suitable swags. >> Further information on the acquisition of OpsGenie
new product – Atlassian Access:
Atlassian Access – the name says it all. The new tool allows access to Atlasssian applications (e.g. Jira, Confluence) for cloud versions to be collected and managed from one location.
Product update – Jira 8.0:
Minimize routine project work and have more time for value-added tasks – Jira 8.0 will help companies work faster and more innovatively. In the keynote, Atlassian gave a detailed outlook on the new functions that will allow issues to be automated even more and teams to be more productive in the future:
- batch e-mails: In the near future, users will be able to receive Jira notifications compressed by e-mail. Details, such as the time interval between transmissions, can be configured by the user.
- Flexible dashbord management: Jira-Filters and dashboards can now be configured centrally by different team members. Admin rights are not necessary.
- Mobile App version: Also new is the introduction of Jira as a mobile version.
- New Jira Issue-Viewer Design: Inspired by the flexible composition of a sushi bento box, the new issue viewer design for the cloud version was created. Relevant information should be able to be displayed in Jira in a simple, logical and structured way.
- Extended comment function: The cloud products have been extended by a rich text editor. Among other things, the update enables the integration of emojis.

- Inline Sub Task Creation: For the creation of a new subtask, it is now sufficient to enter the Sub Task header via a field query in the actual process. Details can be added immediately. The pop-up window for the creation of a subtask is omitted.
When the new version will be released will be announced in the near future. Current status: “Coming soon”.
Product update – Confluence:
Confluence users may are looking forward to a new, more performant and more productive search function. Separate result pages are a thing of the past. Furthermore Confluence was extended by the read mode. This allows data in a data center installation for Confluence to continue to be read during an update or configuration change. However, changes to the contents are not possible during this time.
News – Data Center:
One of the biggest challenges in the introduction of data centers is the migration of Atlassian products away from a server to a cloud solution, said Mike Cannon-Brookes in the keynote. Scalability, data protection and data security are the big issues for the software manufacturer, who is planning a large number of additional data centers based on these objectives. Next year, Frankfurt am Main will be one of the new regional locations.
