In recent years, Atlassian has invested heavily in expanding the cloud offering for the Atlassian toolchain (Jira Software, Confluence, Jira Service Desk, Bitbucket / Bamboo, Access). In addition to numerous new functions reserved for the cloud variant, various service offers and server locations in Europe/Germany, more and more apps are now available on the Atlassian Marketplace for Cloud. For customers who have special requirements regarding their own data center, availability and security or who need to connect to their own systems, Atlassian has also expanded the data center version with extensive functions. Atlassian has now announced that it will phase out the Server deployment variant with a 3.5 year lead time, which will mean major changes for many customers, especially in the German-speaking world.
Official Atlassian Announcement
A detailed statement from Atlassian can be found in the official announcement: “Accelerating our journey to the cloud, together”.
Furthermore, Atlassian provides more information about the “Journey to the Cloud” and answers questions about the changes for servers and data centers in the Community Channel.

Recommendations for server customers with more than 250 users
In addition to migration to the cloud, customers with more than 250 users in their Atlassian applications are recommended to switch to the data center variant. From a certain number of users, the data center version is already cheaper than the server version. For business critical applications, Atlassian also recommends the new “Enterprise Cloud” with a server location in Frankfurt.
Recommendations for server customers with less than 250 users
If you run your Atlassian applications with less than 250 users, Atlassian recommends using the Premium or Standard Cloud. We would be happy to explain to you in detail what the decision means for you in a personal meeting. To support you, we have developed a special migration check, with which you can assess the consequences and expenditure of a migration. Should you decide to migrate, catworkx will be happy to support you with its many years of expertise so that you can continue to benefit from the advantages of Atlassian applications in the future.
